What is M390?
M390 is a commercially available steel produced by Bohler Uddeholm. It uses powder metal technology: knives need good corrosion resistance and high hardness to maintain wear resistance. Chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, and tungsten are added to improve sharpness and good edge retention. Unlike ZDP-189, most of the carbides are formed by vanadium and molybdenum, leaving only free chromium elements for corrosion resistance. M390 hardness reaches 60-62HRC. Bohler calls this steel "Microclean" and it can be polished to a mirror effect. The grinding difficulty is medium.

It has high wear resistance, high corrosion resistance; good grindability and high mirror polishability; high toughness; good resistance to vibration and mechanical shock.
